Book Excerpt

I felt a shift in the air as the winding road through Boston’s jumbled brick became a straight shot cutting through the tidy squares of Cambridge. Full trees obscured my view of the pastel mansions along Brattle Street aka The King’s Highway, a moniker worth a thousand words. While a sense of belonging was a rarity in my life, the disconnect was inescapable in the well-to-do neighborhood Somerled beckoned me to.

West Cambridge once housed revolutionaries and artists. Now the historic homes priced the average resident right out the door.

The good doctor must feel at ease here.

Me? I wanted to go back to bed in my barely-within-the-realm-of-reasonably-priced, cramped South End apartment.

What the fuck was I doing?

Not three months ago, I would’ve told Somerled to jump in the Harbor if he told me to meet him anywhere at three thirty-two a.m.

Or anywhere at any time of day, for that matter.

Now I was parking my dusty Jeep on the street in front of some Boston Brahmin’s inviting eight-foot-high steel fence. The vehicle took the brunt of my frustration as I slammed the door. Manicured hedges might have softened the fence but their lines were even harsher than the metal tines piercing the night sky.

There was an intercom by the entrance. Before I could lift my hand to it, the gate creaked open.

Because that wasn’t creepy at all.

A fountain percolated in the center of the verdant grounds. Some people milled around near the entryway. On closer inspection, I realized they were statues. Bronze approximations of regular humans, unlike the residents of the butter-yellow mansion at the other end of the cobblestone path.

If the front yard was fancy, the house itself was fucking excessive.

It was at least four stories. Towering columns banked the grand entrance and fussy white trim wrapped the windows. Multiple brick chimneys stacked along the exterior walls for the multiple fireplaces inside. The whole display was topped off with a balcony fit for Juliet to hang from.

Jamming my hands in my pockets, I trotted down the stupidly long front walk. I took the many, many front steps two at a time and stopped at the front door. Now what?

The pure white door opened, depositing Somerled’s unfairly dapper form onto the piazza. He wore a three-piece suit in burgundy plaid despite the late summer heat because, well, you already know why.

“Ah, Saoirse,” he said, “I see you have arrived without issue. I wondered if you would be too inebriated for travel at this time of day.”

“Fuck you,” the curse dropped from my lips without conscious thought. “What do you want? And you’re welcome, by the way.”

I could be polite.

He smiled. “Of course. It is gratifying to find you here.”

“You told me to come here. And I stopped drinking! Fuck knows why. You’re the one—”

“So I did. Shall we go inside?”

I planted my feet on the piazza, arms crossing over my chest. “Not until you tell me what’s going on.”

“It appears one of my patients has been the victim of a homicide,” Somerled said as though commenting on the muggy weather.

“What?”

“I believe—”

“No, I heard you just… what?” I scrubbed my hands over my face. “What happened? Why are you here?”

He clicked his tongue. “His family requested my support with this delicate matter.” “Okay,” I said, “you need to do whatever the cops tell you.”

“Yes, and what is that?”

No. This is not happening.

“You did call the cops, right?”

“Obviously, I am currently engaged in that process,” he scoffed.

An inadvertent sound encompassing all of the frustration of interacting with Somerled escaped me.

“Saoirse?”

“No, not me,” I shouted. “Like the actual— Like dispatch!”

He laughed. He actually fucking laughed at me. “The actual police? To whom am I speaking?”

“What if the guy’s not dead?” My voice pitched higher with disbelief and a touch of panic.

“I assure you he is.”

My hands went from cradling my forehead to ripping out my hair. “Is the scene secure? Do you even know if it’s safe? What if—”

“Calm yourself,” he said. “It is your job to attend to such eventualities, is it not?” “For fuck’s sake. You stay out here.”

“It is a bit late for that, I am afraid.”

“Stay. Here.” I pointed to a patch of wood planking. “And call nine-one-one!” I threw open the door and stepped inside.

My Review

I was delighted to read Dead Blood City, I like Saoirse  as a character. She isn't perfect, far from it. She's got problems and not just because of her abilities. DBC was a very quick and engaging read, I think I finished it in a day (which as a slow reader says a lot!) So once I finished the first one, I immediately went into this one. I wanted to know what was in store for Saoirse  this time!

I was not disappointed. Just like the first book, I was pulled right into the story. I felt like I was putting the puzzle pieces of Saoirse's abilities together along with her. The way that Jo Denning writes, makes everything so real and believable. The many characters that fill this book are vividly written and feel like flesh and blood people

The interactions with Alderisi and Dr. Somerled were awesome! Creepy at times, hot at times, hilarious at time (mostly due to Saoirse's reactions) made these parts stand out. I thoroughly enjoyed the balance act of romance/thriller/paranormal. I loved how everything came together at the end and laid the foundations for the next book in the series! I will definitely read the next book!

I would certainly recommend this book! It was awesome!

Happy New Week!

So this is how I feel about Mondays and new weeks...

A little bit of this:

and a little bit of this:

I am always so so motivated (snortle) to start a new week! The possibilities! The new energy! Hahaha! Well, I am going to try to make the most of this week and get as much reading done as I can! I don't have an overabundance of work scheduled this week (fortunate for my brain, unfortunate for my wallet!) so I have plenty of time to get some good reading in! There is also the Reverse Readathon this weekend! July 21st! I'm definitely going to do this after work!

Here's my menu for this week!

I will have Hush Hush City as a review blog tour on Wednesday, so stay tuned for that!

So what are you reading this week? How are you feeling? I want to know!

Weekend Reading-Personal Readathon

I'm the happy and proud owner of a Kindle Fire now (thanks Prime Day!) and I have stocked it full of delightful (mostly free) books! So what better way to celebrate this new purchase than to make good use of it? So I've decided to do myself a very low-key/low-stress readathon this weekend!

I have some delightful books on the menu.

I'm a good chunk into Prophecy already, then I'll dive into Hush, Hush City (it's a review book) and then Destiny. I work a bit this weekend but I will make as much time for reading as possible. I may graze on more books from my jam packed Kindle, but these are the selections for now.

I will use this post as my update journal.

Update 1-Friday

Prophecy by Elizabeth Haydon

Pages Read: 13 pages

Notes: A paltry sum I will admit. Work turned out to be absolutely stressful at the last minute and I just turned off my brain afterwards. Didn't reboot at all.

Update 2-Saturday

Prophecy-Starting Page 211

Dead Blood City-Started

Pages Read: 133 or 42%

Notes: I am loving this weird/dark story.

Update 3 Sunday

Prophecy-Starting Page 211 Ended page 222

Dead Blood City- 133 or 42% FINISHED

Hush Hush City-3% in

Notes: I loved DBC! I got some read in Prophecy too.

All in all I'll count it as a successful weekend! I finished a book, started another one and got a little bit read in my big ass fantasy read!

Librarians Today – No Buns or Pearls

Although I’m now retired, I worked as a librarian for over thirty years. For all of those years, and even now, I’ve seen the librarian stereotype perpetuated in ads, TV shows, films, and even other books. And for all of those years, that stereotype has bothered me.

Not that stereotypes can’t sometimes be used for humorous effect, but this particular one is so wrong that I feel it’s my duty to try to contradict it whenever I can.

In many instances, librarians are still portrayed as elderly ladies with their hair in a bun and glasses on chain, wearing sweater sets or frumpy dresses and a string of pearls. They are almost always portrayed as middle-aged or elderly, white, and female. They like to shush patrons and are generally bitter and cranky. They sit behind big wooden desks, still use a card catalog, and seem to spend most of their time stamping due dates in books.

This is so very far from the truth. Firstly, librarians are not all female. Nor are they all older, white, individuals who possess shy, retiring, personalities. In my many years as a librarian and library director, I have worked with all of the following: male librarians, young librarians, LGBTQIA+ librarians, tattooed and pierced librarians, very gregarious and social librarians, and librarians from every racial, ethnic, and cultural background.

Given that librarians constantly interact with a wide variety of patrons, they must possess great people skills. Being extremely reserved or introverted is NOT a good qualification for this career. In fact, if someone goes into librarianship with the aim of avoiding people, they’re probably going to be out of luck. Honestly, being able to successfully interact with a diverse population of patrons is an essential requirement for most library positions.

Today, libraries are not secluded ivory towers where decorum and silence reign. They are often noisy, exciting places where people of all ages and backgrounds congregate to learn, discover, and share information. Truthfully, in all my years of librarianship, I never once shushed a patron. With many schools and universities requiring a significant amount of group work, libraries must also provide areas where students can interact and collaborate. In addition, libraries provide life-long learning opportunities through literacy training, workshops, and other educational programs. Most of this involves group discussion and conversation, so the days of silent libraries are long gone. (Although most libraries do try to provide some designated “quiet spaces” for those who need them).

Also gone, despite the media portrayals, are card catalogs. They have been replaced by online systems in almost all libraries, even the small libraries in K-12 schools. Librarians generally do not just sit behind desks checking out books, either. Circulation activities happen at self-serve kiosks as well as at desks staffed by library assistants or, at schools and colleges, by student workers. Reference desks are being replaced with “roving librarians,” who go where patrons need assistance instead of making the patrons come to them. Rather than just providing tables and chairs, most libraries now offer “maker spaces” that include the latest technology, as well as computer labs, loans of laptops and other devices, group study spaces, lecture halls, and community meeting rooms.

As libraries have changed dramatically over the last decades, so have librarians. Now they must be tech savvy, embracing cutting edge technology and continually updating their knowledge of new trends in education, business, computing, and other fields.

So the next time you see an old-fashioned portrayal of a librarian, please remember that this is just a stereotype. Librarians can be, and are, as diverse as any other profession. Their only similarity lies in the desire to help others discover, understand, and use information and knowledge, and the joy they take in promoting the love of books and reading.

Weekend Things-Reading Plans and Life Things

Today is Saturday (duh Melissa), and I have work. A LOT of it today and a little bit of it tomorrow. So, so I'm not expecting to get a whole lotta reading done, HOWEVER, I do not work every moment of the weekend...sooo there's time to squash some reading into the mix. I've been doing that thing where when you get off work all you wanna do is just turn of the brain nugget and relax, so I've been zoning into Sims 4 and making my poor Sims do things. FOR HOURS. Then I look up and it's time to go to bed. So productive. It's crazy how addictive that game is. Plus it like fantasy wish fulfillment. My Sims can stay at home, play with their plants, and make a fortune doing it. Sigh. The life. They don't appreciate their God.

Anyways, this weekend I will institute a Sim's ban...or at least a Sim's limit...(addiction speaking) and focus more on reading to unwind.

I am going to chug away at Prophecy by Elizabeth Haydon. So hopefully by mid-week next week I'll have a review up for you on that! So far I am loving this series and these characters, so unless something changes by the end of the book I'll be moving right along to the 3rd book in the OG series. (There's apparently 6 other books after this)

(Trigger Warning, Diet, Fitness, etc)

K, so the title of this post also includes Life Things, so here they be. I am trying to lose weight as well as all my other lofty goals (ahem...books read challenge) and so far this is the one that's been slightly the easiest. I won't inflict upon you pictures of myself, as I do like you all. However, I am serious business about this lately. So just to paint a word picture for you, I am: 42 years old, 5'0 and started at 145lbs (some odd ozs). I am not nor have ever been obese or further, however us short gals do not carry extra weight all that well. Now I do not truck with the BMI scale because I think it's a bunch of dumb hooey but it tells me that at my height I should be in the 95-117 range. Alrighty, well when I did weigh 95lbs in my 20's I looked like a sickly waif...which sadly at that time was the look I was going for (goth stage) but I don't think it would look all that good on me now. So my personal target weight is about 120lbs.

My method to madness, Keto and Intermittent Fasting. I have done Keto many a time and have seen results but my laziness always creeps in. I've been doing Keto for almost 2 weeks (this upcoming friday I believe marks the 3rd week. I'm currently sitting at 138lbs (and some ozs). I am like so many people out there that rely on food for comfort (and it is, don't get me wrong I love food) but I have used it as a crutch for so long. Intermittent Fasting has helped me to deal with those triggers that have me stuffing my gob when I'm upset, bored, or whatever instead of waiting until I'm actually hungry to eat. Plus, it's helped me recognize actual hunger instead of say...boredom or just plain thirstiness. I am also wearing my fitness watch (cheap amazon knockoff) to track my steps. It's really eye opening to see how little I was moving everyday, and kind of a rush to hit my step goal. Anyhoo, I'm not preaching these things just explaining how and why I'm doing them.

So far so good. I have also been mindfully tracking everything that I eat. Seeing it in "writing" really does put it into perspective. Like, did I really want that little debbie snack cake to go on my permanent record? Did I really need that 4th slice of pizza? Stuff like that.

Another thing:

Writing, I did sign up for the July Camp NaNo but I have hit a stumbling block and it's fizzled out. I think I'm going to scrap that idea and try to get another one going. So I think that's my way of saying...I quit July Camp. I'm still going to write, but I think it will be a thing I do everyday instead of a challenge? I don't know. There's still plenty of July left so that's up in the air for now.

Another thing:

I have some review tours coming up for the blog. I'm just letting you guys know what's up. I've already had some promo style posts and will do more but I won't "junk" up the blog with too many PR style posts. I just like helping writers out with exposure when I can. :)

Caves of Glass C.A. Gray (Blog Tour + Giveaway)

Rion's prophecy gives him hope through his bleakest years, while Ginny's prophecy haunts her....

Caves of Glass

by C.A. Gray

Genre: Epic Fantasy

The illegitimate son of a peasant, Rion of Tryferos has very limited prospects with only one remarkable talent: when he plays the lyre, he ushers in the supernatural balm of peace to all who hear. This turns out to be his ticket into the palace, where he nightly plays for the restless, rejected king. King Hector of Tryferos is paranoid, because he knows his days on the throne are numbered. What he doesn’t know is that his anointed successor is Rion.

Princess Genevieve is a spare to the throne of Mageia, shunned by all but her mother out of fear of her magical gift: she possesses the power to manipulate the thoughts and desires of those around her. But Ginny would do anything just to be normal. When a fulfilled prophecy of her mother's untimely death also foretells that Ginny will ascend the Mageian throne, Ginny wonders whether she has any control over her own fate at all, or whether everything is predetermined.

Both Rion and Ginny are drawn to the forbidden Caves of Glass at the icy pinnacles that border their two perpetually feuding nations. According to legend, the Caves are either a place of strange forbidden magic, or else a place where all deception is stripped away, leaving only clarity and truth in its wake. As Rion flees for his life and Ginny struggles against her destiny, in the Caves of Glass, they find both each other, and themselves.

C.A. Gray is a Naturopathic Medical Doctor (NMD), with a primary care practice in Tucson, Arizona. She has always been captivated by the power of a good story, fictional or otherwise, which is probably why she loves holistic medicine: a patient’s physical health is invariably intertwined with his or her life story, and she believes that the one can only be understood in context with the other. Her favorite fictional tales have always been epic battles of good versus evil, with a strong tendency towards parable. She still wants to be everything when she grows up.
