~A Winter's Respite~ Read-a-thon Day 1 and 2 Post

A Winter's Respite Read-a-Thon hosted by Michelle @ Season's of Reading
My first book will be Jane Austen's Emma. I'm trying to get finished with it before the end of the month! It's a great book, just super wordy and hard to sit and read for more than 30 minutes (for me at least!)

Day 1 and 2 and 3:
Book: Emma by Jane Austen
Starting Page: 65
Ending Page:

Notes: I'm combining two days into this post. I had a busy day with work yesterday and did not get much reading done :( So crossing my fingers today is better!

Tuesday notes: BAH! This week! I love to work, so I'm not complaining about my job, but I've been soooo busy by the time I have time my eyes are wanting to shut! Combining 3 days into one post = lazy Melissa.

Bout of Books: Goals

Bout of Books Read-a-Thon

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda @ On a Book Bender and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, January 7th and runs through Sunday, January 13th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure, and the only reading competition is between you and your usual number of books read in a week. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional. For all Bout of Books 6.0 information and updates, be sure to visit the Bout of Books blog. -From the Bout of Books 6.0 team

Goals:
  • I am going to plan to finish up 2-3 books independent of my read-a-long selections.
  • Catch up on my read-a-longs
  • Write posts for the books I finish.

My reading selections (not mandatory and will most likely change)
  • Fonduing Fathers
  • The Woman in White
  • The President's Secret
  • Sydney West
  • The Woman From Paris
  • Warm Bodies (Ebook)
  • Favorite and Edgwood by Karen McQuestion
I will start a post each day charting my progress. Chances are I'll start reading right after my son gets on the bus. I've been doing super well at keeping my blog fresh and having something new at least every other day, so this is going to help me keep that trend up! :)

Read-a-thon: The Classics Club

Woot! I am making 2013 the year to expand my literary horizons, and reading classics is on the VERY TIP TOP of my list! I just found this read-a-thon happening this weekend! It's a 24 hour RAT, and chances are I'm not gonna make the whole things, but I will do my very bestest!

So stay tuned. My selections will be my read-a-longs. I'm assuming since this is being held by the Classics Club (click the button up at the top) then classics should be my picks.

  • Les Mis
  • Persuasion
  • The Woman In White
  • Mrs. Dalloway
I am not even tryin' to say I'll read ALL of these. I'm thinking 50-100 pages of each will suit me just fine!

Spring into Horror Read-a-Thon

I know, I know..another one? YES! It is friggen KNOWN

that you cannot participate in TOO MANY read-a-thons, PLUS this one is hosted by my buddy Michelle!  So it starts 4/23 at 12am, which I will still be drooling on my pillow at that hour, but immediatly after I wake up and coffee up I'm going to start reading! The jist of this is that you will have to read at least 1 horror themed book during the weeklong event. I think I can manage. :)

Here is my list:

Yup, I am set! I am going to also try to finish up Soulless by Gail Carriger, but I don't know if that counts? Anyhoodle, this is my plans for the week. I'm gonna keep rolling with my roll ;)

Read Your Own Books-a-Thon

This is a read-a-thon hosted by The Bibliophilic Book Blog and runs from 9pm (8pm my time) on Thursday night until Sunday at 9pm (again..8pm.) I have a ton of review books to read! Awesome right? But what about my wee little books that I've picked up just for fun? They get put on the sidelines...well not this weekend! Nuh huh! I am going to give them the attention they deserve!  Do you have some you need to spend some quality time with? Well here be the rules for the 'thon:

- Read Your OWN books
- Runs from 9pm on Thursday the 15th (EST)...some of my posts might be a bit off since I am 11 hours ahead of EST in KST. Sorry for that...anyway it will run until Sunday the 18th at 9pm (EST). This should give everyone some time to participate.- GIVEAWAYS (DUH!?!) I personally am giving away a Nook original in a cover. I am also giving away multiple audiobooks and whatever else strikes my fancy. In order to enter the giveaway for the Nook you must participate....it will be finished when the read-a-thon is over. So...start planning. (International Welcome)

My Stack Looks as Such:
  • Married with Zombies (finish)
  • The Last Book in the Universe
  • Shut Out
  • Ada
and if I'm feeling really ambitious I'll attempt these (but only if books above are finished)
  • Lord of the Vampires (ebook)
  • Hellbent (ebook)
  • Halo (ebook)
So what do you think? I know you wanna join up ;)

Daily Check-In: Friday Sept. 2

Photobucket

So I'm participating in the Month Long Read-a-Thon (click button for more into) and decided that I will update once daily. Since this is a month long event I won't track time read, just books and pages. My aim for September is 20 books total! Let's see if I reach it!

The "thon" started yesterday but I didn't get much reading in, so I will start today.

My daily statuses will usually be short, just to keep track per day of what I've accomplished!

Status Update #1
Books Read: Mile 81-Stephen King (ebook)-51 pages, Love Lies Bleeding-Jess McConkey(ARC)-60 pages
Pages Read: 111 pages
Total for the Month: 1 Book, 111 pages
Daily Thoughts:  I spent a good chunk of today getting my reviews scheduled and caught up. I'll have much more time to read tomorrow.

Read-a-Thon Starting Line Post

So it's 7:20 am, and I am starting my 'thon! I know I'm like 20 minutes late but believe me I'm gonna need those 20 minutes! Anyways, YAY!

Introductory Questions:
1)Where are you reading from today? Anniston, AL, or more specifically from my desk but I will most likely switch to my comfy chair in just a bit.
2)Three random facts about me…I work at home full time, I'm definitely a hoarder of books, and I love anything and everything about Mr. Nathan Fillion. :) Maybe I'll bless you all with a picture sometime!
3)How many books do you have in your TBR pile for the next 24 hours? Too many to count, so I won't! My plan is to just read, read, read, and oh yeah....read.
4)Do you have any goals for the read-a-thon (i.e. number of books, number of pages, number of hours, or number of comments on blogs)? I would like to finish three books from the begining. I have a few I need to finish, plus I am plegding money to the Kid's Need To Read foundation so that's motivation right there!
5)If you’re a veteran read-a-thoner, any advice for people doing this for the first time? Get up and move, at least once an hour! It will really help your energy levels stay up! Drink plenty of water, and just relax and have fun!

A Winter's Respite Read-a-Thon Day 4

Well you guys! Yesterday was fun, but I didn't read as much as I'd like. :( So here's crossing my fingers to a productive reading day!

I'm going to start the reading day at 7:00am today!

Here are the books that I am going to read:

The Black Dahlia (starting on page 132) Stopped on 206-Total 74
Fallen (starting on page 25) Stopped on 43-Total 18
The Greyfriar (starting on page 1)

Now I know that seems like I'm crazy picking out three books, but I seem to have reading ADD at the moment, so I figured I'd be more productive if I give myself a wider selection today! Hope it works!

Sunday Somethings: Or Me Geeking Out Over Read-a-Thons!

This ^^ has gotten me in a tizzy! I have so much geeky anticipation for this event! Really! I've got each day of this week planned out to help me optimize my reading experience! How nerdy is that? My BIGGEST is that on Friday (after school) we are going to let T (son) stay over at Grandpa's house for the weekend! That's right folks! I will have a kid free house for this RaT!! I am super excited about that! The last one I tried with him here and I failed at reading. I can't just plop his butt in front of the TV or the computer and be okay with that! It's cool in small doses but not for more than an hour and a half.

Monday -Friday I'll be getting my house as spotless as I can so I can concentrate on reading. I will be grocery shopping for snackage and drinks on weds (to cut back on the grazing that we would do if I got them today!) I will start tomorrow with getting my reading stack ready.

So what are you doing to prepare? Have you signed up yet? Are you going to be reading or cheering? ARE YOU AS GEEKED OUT AS I AM!?

Fall Catch-Up Read-a-Thon Final Post

Well it's over. The week is done and I've read my last page for this 'thon! Here are my stats:

Books Read:
  1. (finished) Blue Bells of Scotland
  2. Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
  3. Half Empty
Pages: about 651 pages in total

Hours of Reading: about 10 hours :( which isn't all that great! I had some good days and some really horrid days!

**these are estimations! i didn't really keep track like i should have.

Ending Thoughts:
This was an awesome read-a-thon! I just wished I could have organized myself a bit better. I think the crazy distractions and my haphazardly organized schedule didn't really help out at all! I would have loved to have gotten more reading done but I'm not going to complain! 3 books in one week is better than I have done in a long time! I hope this 'thon happens next year!

Mini Challenge-Fall Catch-Up Read-a-Thon

The Mini-Challenge was to visit the ALA website and visit the list of banned or challenged books and pick one that you have read or would like to read, then explain why. Here is my answer:

I've read Brave New World by Aldous Huxley last year. I loved it and was unnerved by it all at the same time! I didn't read it because it was banned. I read it because the subject matter was intriguing to me. It scared the crap out of me that people could become like the characters. The way the world was in the book, I could see happening in reality. THAT was scary to me.

Looking at the list, I can see that I've read several other banned books. The books I've read have all been what I would consider some of my favorites, which really saddens me.

I've read these banned books:
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
The Lord of the Flies by William Golding
1984 by George Orwell
Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (one of my favorites!)
Charlotte's Web by E. B. White (WTF!? Why?)
Catch-22 by Joseph Heller
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Animal Farm by George Orwell
Winnie-the-Pooh by A. A. Milne (again..wtf!?)
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell (love)
The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien
The Awakening by Kate Chopin (love)
