Blog Tour: Social Insecurity

Book Details
Genre: Cozy Mystery
Published by: CreateSpace
Release Date: March 28, 2013
Number of Pages: 242

Blurb:
Brigid Kildare is not your typical hard boiled private eye. But she doesn’t pretend to be. No matrimonial. No child custody. No bodyguard or surveillance work. No process serving. Brigid is strictly data. Asset searches, background searches, computer security, pre-employment screening, and basically any type of records research is what she deals in. And you really could not expect anything else. After all, your average five foot tall, blue eyed, blond (one friend describes her as looking like a Christmas tree angel) is rarely the person you would send out after a bail jumper. Oh, and there is that whole one leg thing – ADA aside, most people don’t think of an amputee as the go to person for a security job.

But in SOCIAL INSECURITY, the first in the Brigid Kildare Mystery Series, professional PI, Brigid Kildare, turns amateur sleuth when old ladies in the Federal Hill area of Providence start to go missing and she can’t get the police to believe her. As her assistant and long time friend, Kevin, puts it: “Honey, if an old lady like Jessica Fletcher can do it, a one-legged PI and her gay PA can do it too!” Brigid solves the mystery, along with an odd cast of friends and family, but not before four old ladies have died, she has caught the eye of a handsome Providence detective, and she discovers that not everyone who is close to her is what they appear to be.

About Kate Eileen Shannon
Kate Eileen Shannon is a Writer, Artist, and sometimes Real Estate Agent – as she says, ‘a purveyor of ephemera and bagatelle’. Trifles. Little things. Here today, gone tomorrow. In other words, a little of this, a bit of that.
She has had three husbands and two children; lived in Ireland, Rhode Island, and Florida; owned a brake repair shop, an art gallery, a farm, and a boat building business; been a Realtor, a title examiner, a real estate closer, and a government employee which led her straight to being unemployed, laid off, made redundant.
Kate is currently living in Rhode Island overlooking the water and a lighthouse; with her husband, Dick Thomas (who won’t let her have a cat); where she spends her time painting, drawing, and of course working on the next book in the Brigid Kildare mystery series, MEDITATED MURDER.

My Thoughts:
This was a really cute, quick read that kept my attention from the start.  It was short, but still packed a nice bit of info into it. This is the first in a series, so I could tell there was a little bit of a "establishing back history" kind of ninja info dump. I say ninja because, it never felt heavy handed and was a quite natural feeling bit of storytelling about our main heroine. Usually my biggest complaints about firsts in a series is that the writer feels the need to just dump this BIG lump of info on the reader from the start, but while I did learn about Brigid's past, I never felt bogged down by that. Good Job Mrs. Shannon!

Now to the meaty bits of the book, I really liked the plot. The mystery is established pretty early, rightfully so since this isn't a long book, so you are pretty much rolling from the start! The momentum doesn't really let up until the end, which kept me pretty much wide eyed and anxious for answers! Again, well done! So far this book is hitting them all out of the park! (Is that an appropriate baseball reference? I'm not good at sports!)

Anyhoo, I liked Brigid and I liked Earl. I have to admit to a big DURRR moment when Earl was compared to Rick Fox I was quite confused.

This was my first mental image. ^^..Rick James...I have no idea why. Then I remembered..THIS is Rick Fox...

Very big difference...lol (Hmmmm)

Long story short, and two ricks later..I will say this is a great book. The writing was VERY good and the story kept even my book A.D.D. addled brain hooked into the story!

Promo Blitz: John Smith

John Smith - Last Known Survivor of the Microsoft Wars by Roland Hughes
Age Group: Adult
Genre: Dystopian, Science Fiction
Release Date: May 30, 2013

What if the Mayans got the start of the end correct because they had survived it once before? What if our written history was just as accurate as the old tale about three blind men describing an elephant? What if classic science fiction writing and television shows each got a piece of it correct, would you know which ones? If your eyes can only see a tiny portion of a collage do you know it is a collage?

Fans of Babylon 5, Star Trek TNG, Battle Star Galactica (the new one) and classic science fiction writing will enjoy the bountiful Easter Egg hunt contained within. When you were a child you learned to connect paper clips or thread beads together to make a necklace. Sit back and watch the beads you’ve had all your life form the picture you could not see. Consider for one second the possibility of the story, then hang onto your mind with both hands while you take the ride.
Excerpt:

In the past, when there was a massive nuclear disaster, mankind put in a concerted effort to clean it up. Even when the Chernobyl meltdown happened in a place called the Ukraine,we built a low-quality and hasty tomb around the site and put as much of the waste as possible in safe containment. The closest my cycle had to the off-limits places you know have occurred on an island nation known as Japan.

A plant there failed so completely after being hit by a tsunami that untold quantities of highly radioactive water went into the ocean along with radioactive dust, which covered farmland for miles. One thing is certain with prolonged radiation exposure:mutation. Sometimes it kills the life form, sometimes it alters it.

Enough radiation will kill any known life form but we never studied prolonged exposure to radiation from high-grade fuel rods, or what happens to creatures who drink the surface water containing particles from these rods.

We do know that the venom mutates, as well, along with the bacteria, which naturally occurs in the mouths of certain creatures. If I ask you to travel the direction of the setting sun two days by horse, stay there a day, then come back before completing the interview, will you do it?

Epic Fantasy Adventure
Date Published: 7/6/2013

The night before his Coming-of-Age, Ghyll and his two friends escaped their castle on a clandestine hunt that would forever change their lives.

They returned just in time to see their island castle destroyed by strange warriors from a dragonboat and flocks of burning birds.

Ghyll’s birthday turned into a nightmare as they fled into the night.

This begins an epic journey to find out who is trying to kill them... and most importantly, why?

Fortunately, they can count on colorful new friends to assist, including a sometimes overly enthusiastic fire mage, an inexperienced paladin and a female beastmaster who is a ferocious mountain lion.

In a world filled with jealous priests, corrupt magistrates, bored aristocrats and power-hungry magicians, they try to survive dark wizards, murderous golems, and fire bird attacks. It soon becomes apparent that not one but several assassins are after them. Who are these members of an obscure, long-forgotten organization? And whose cold hand reaches across the boundaries of space and time to threaten weakened Rhidauna?

While the time is running the friends undertake a quest that leads them through a large part of Rhidauna. Following them, the reader is carried along on an exciting journey through a colorful world, whose people, culture and atmosphere are described with great attention to detail without the story losing momentum.

Paul E. Horsman
Lives in Roosendaal, The Netherlands.

I was born in Bussum, The Netherlands, in the year 1952.

After many years in business, I ended up in 1995 in education. My school was specialized in Dutch language and integration courses for foreigners. Unhappily, due to changed legislation this beautiful work stopped in mid-2012. My age, five years from retirement, makes it nigh on impossible to find something else, so now I am building up a career as an independent author.

SF and Fantasy have fascinated me since my high school days, but apart from some juvenile trash, I never seriously tried to write anything.

It was in 2007, I took the first steps in what is now the fantasy kingdom of Rhidauna. After several false starts and associated discouraged intervals, a spark began to grow and mid-2010, the first two parts of Shadow of the Revenaunt were more or less written.

With the Revenaunt-series, I had in mind something in the way of days gone by. A heroic tale with sympathetic protagonists and black villains, in which good always triumphs in the end. Something to counterbalance the modern gritty style.

In 2012 the first book, Rhidauna, was traditionally published in The Netherlands. The second book, Zihaen, followed in March 2013 and book three, Ordelanden, is scheduled for September in NL. Now I’m selfpublishing the international edition, well-translated and edited. The English version of Rhidauna appeared in July. Zihaen is being edited for later this year.

Next to the Revenaunt-series, I’m writing The Shardheld Saga, a trilogy, of which the first, Shardfall, appeared on Amazon, Smashwords, B&N, etc, in May 2013. The second book, Runemaster, is being edited and scheduled for September.

Excerpt 1:

...I sighed softly and did something I'd only read about in forbidden novels. I leant

in, brushing my lips against his. The kiss was soft and chaste. It lasted no more than a mere

second before I pulled back.

"What was  that, Olive?" He  gave me  a horrified look  and  all  I could  feel was my

stomach  somersault.  I  knew  romance  and love  weren't  ever  spoken  of in  Genesis.  There

was  no  need  when  the  government  knew  who  was  perfect  for  one  another,  and  children

were won by lottery and conceived in a lab. Intimate acts were considered unnecessary.

"I  read  about  it  in  a  book,"  I  whispered,  afraid  I'd  done  it  all  wrong.  "It  was  a

kiss," I breathed, chewing on my bottom lip nervously. I’d never kissed anyone before and

worried  he  thought it was  terrible.  I’d  never  seen  two  people  share  a  kiss,  I  didn’t  quite

know what it was supposed to look like, but I thought I’d done it right after reading about

it. My hand reached out, grabbing his arm. "Please don't be mad at me." I breathed. "You

have to swear you won't tell anyone!" Joshua hesitated for only an instant before he leaned

in, taking another taste from my lips trying again. The second kiss was softer and satisfied

both of our curiosities. My heart raced and my skin warmed to his touch. "I thought today

was going to turn out so much worse," I confessed.

Joshua laughed as he pulled back slightly, staring at me. His eyes had darkened a deeper

richer  shade  of  blue.  I'd  never  seen  his  eyes  change  colors  before.  His  fingers  moved  to

tickle my stomach with a grin. "Worse? Really? You're not happy you married me? You're

just relieved it wasn't someone worse?"

"No!"  I  shrieked,  "That's  not  what  I  meant!"  I  tried  to  catch  my  breath,  but  he

hardly  gave  me  a  second  more  than  necessary.  I  pulled  from  his  ticklish  grasp,  jumped

from the couch and ran across the room in a fit of laughter. He quickly followed, jumping

over the sofa as he was just inches from me. He was close now, smiling and trailing behind

me  as  I  ran  toward  the  bedroom.  It  was  probably  the  worst  place  I  could  go,  trapped

between  Joshua  and  a mattress.  I  felt him  tackle me down  onto  the plush bed, his hands

skimmed my stomach but he was no longer tickling me. The laughter still hadn't subsided.

"Breathe," Joshua said, staring intently at me.

"Trying," I gasped between fits of laughter. Lying down helped settle the feeling of

my racing heart, and after a moment I shifted along the mattress, reaching out to him. "I

want to tell you a story," I insisted as my fingers found his cheek. "One I read in a book." I

wanted him to learn the things I had about love and romance. I couldn't help but feel my

body stir with a strange fire and warmth as he loomed just above me. Staring up at him I

froze on the mattress hearing the latch click on the front door. I knew it had been locked.
