Lucky Rabbit’s Foot by Courtney Davis

These were only the beginning of Fawn Malero’s problems, but they coincided with a vampire wedding-of-the-century coming to town and that made them a top priority. And as Logan began to take on more duties as pack Alpha, her loyalties were being tested by everyone. Could she run part of the city and part of the pack? Then the burglaries started... of human homes, threatening exposure! Being pulled in so many directions, Fawn feared she was failing her father and the supernaturals of Seattle leaving them open for challengers to their authority. Will Fawn's ability to enlist the help of other supernaturals be enough? Or will they finally see that she doesn't have what it takes to keep Seattle safe and its supernaturals hidden?

EXCERPT

“Damn.” Dead end, at least for now. We walked over to the Space Needle and the magic residue on it was still palpable. Annabel wanted to get a better look and decided to ride up to the top, but I decided to stay down, and watch the rabbits hopping nearby, if they started to head into that parking garage I was going to follow.

It was a warm day and even in my tank top and jeans I was feeling overdressed. But I’d had to wear boots, I didn’t want to risk rabbit poop in sandals again.

I was watching the elevator go up and up when a prickling on the back of my neck had me turning just in time to see a red braid, yellow jacket, and green backpack hurrying down the street.

Rusty.

I ran for her, that woman was just too suspicious to ignore. The timing of her arrival and the fact that she didn’t introduce herself to my father. It added up to no good.

I kept one hand on my pepper spray as I pushed past a crowd of tourists and gained quite a few choice words and hand gestures from the locals mixed in, but I didn’t stop. When I was close enough, I reached out and grabbed the woman’s shoulder, forcing her to stop so suddenly I plowed into the back of her, and we both fell forward into the street.

A car braked to avoid running us over, tires squealing as it darted around us and swiped into another car before coming to a stop. I had just caused an accident, fender bender really, but I didn’t care, Rusty was going to give me some answers about why she was in town.

We’d rolled a bit and I forced her down so that in the end I was straddling her, and she was face down on the pavement. I had a big smile of satisfaction on my face. Until I got up and she stood, brushing rabbit poop off her jeans, looking furious with a suspicious brown smear on her cheek. My heart sank. Her face was covered in freckles, her eyes were bright green, and she was definitely not Rusty.

“Oh, sorry,” I said weakly.

“Are you fucking insane?” She snapped. The gathered crowd was offering to call the police and giving me looks that resembled an angry mob out for blood.

“I tripped on one of these damn rabbits,” I said belligerently. It wasn’t a bad excuse really.

The drivers from the vehicles that had crashed were arguing loudly now and the driver who’d swerved out of our way was gesturing at me. This was bad. I didn’t really want to deal with the police, so I did what anyone in my position would do. I threw an apology over my shoulder as I ran, fast, and I didn’t stop until I was certain no one had followed.

I really hoped no one had recognized me from my yoga studio, this could be really bad for my human business.

When I was gasping and leaning against a building in an alley, I pulled out my phone and texted Annabel so she’d know where to pick me up. No way was I showing my face back there again until the witnesses were gone.

As I waited and caught my breath, I watched a few rabbits hop around. I crouched and tried to beckon them closer.

“Come here you little monster,” I whispered sweetly. I waited and one got close. I tried to pour all my power into feeling the damn thing but came up empty. No thoughts, no feelings, nothing. It was like staring into a blank space. “What are you,” I grumbled as it hopped away.

Annabel showed up shortly after looking like she was barely holding back laughter. “Did you tackle someone and cause a car accident?” she asked when I hopped into the passenger seat.

“I thought it was Rusty. I wasn’t going to just let her walk away from me without answers this time.”

Annabel nodded. “I thought I saw her too when I was at the top looking down at the two cars and people yelling. Yellow coat, red hair, and backpack? Right?”

“Exactly, but it wasn’t her, this girl had freckles and green eyes.”

“Accent?”

“Not that I heard when she was accusing me of being a psycho,” I laughed.

“Dang, so you did cause the accident,” she laughed.

“Unfortunately.” I had also ruined my jeans, ripped holes in the knees and a layer of skin too, they were bleeding slightly and stinging now that the adrenaline was down. Somehow, I’d managed to dodge most of the poop, though not all of it. “Someone really needs to be out there poop scooping the city.”

“I think they are, it’s just too much to keep up on. So you tackled her and realized it wasn’t the right girl, then you just ran away?” Annabel laughed.

“What was I supposed to do? Let the police arrest me for assault and causing an accident?”

Annabel shrugged, “No, I guess you really didn’t have a choice. At least no one got pepper sprayed or stunned to passing out this time.”

I was learning, I don’t pull weapons first anymore, at least not in public.

My Review:

Having not met Fawn until this book (i.e-Melissa didn't read the previous books in the series) I was not at all lost going into this one. There was still just enough world building/character details that helped me not be completely lost (well in the sense that I had no clue what was happening or WHO it was happening too). I still got lost in the world building (in a very good way!) That is the sign of a very well crafted story!

I liked the quirkiness of the characters, the story itself was super fun. I did like the supernatural element mixed in with the mystery. There is just so much going on in this book, but at not a single point did it feel like TOO much! I was intrigued and delighted with all the characters and all the neat little nibbles that kept me reading quickly.

Also with all the rabbits I couldn't resist thinking about this (Sorry I'm a complete nerd)

All in all though, I loved it. It was a fun, quick read full of great world building and story. I would recommend it to anyone that enjoys mysteries and likes a little supernatural element as well. Definitely will check out the previous books! Great read!
