Quick Review-Benny & Shrimp

About the Book:
An international sensation, this addictively readable tale asks the question: Why is it so impossible to get a relationship between two middle-aged misfits to work? The answer lies in the story of Shrimp, a young widowed librarian with a sharp intellect and a home so tidy that her jam jars are in alphabetical order; Benny, a gentle, overworked milk farmer who fears becoming the village's Old Bachelor; and an unlikely love that should not be as complicated as it seems. Reminiscent of the works of Carol Shields, this quirky, humorous, beautifully told novel breathes new life into the age-old conundrum that is love.

About the Author:

KATARINA MAZETTI was nominated for the Prix Cevennes in France in 2007 and has worked as a journalist, teacher, and author of books for readers of all ages. For twenty years she lived on a small farm in northern Sweden, an experience that became the basis for Benny & Shrimp, her first adult novel, which was adapted into an award-winning film in Sweden (winning the Swedish equivalent of the Oscars).

My Review:

I thought it was a charming tale of two very lonely people going through difficult times in their lives. It's at its core a quirky love story. It was a quick read and an enjoyable one. I wasn't as taken with it as I had hoped to be. I gave the book a 3.5/5 rating. I felt that some parts of their relationship were too rushed and certain spots were not very believable. I can't get too descriptive because it would ruin the book, but I cannot understand "Shrimp" just being okay with what her co-worker did. I know I personally would freak out but then again this is fiction.

My Rating: 3.5/5

Review-Alice I Have Been

About the Book:

Few works of literature are as universally beloved as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Now, in this spellbinding historical novel, we meet the young girl whose bright spirit sent her on an unforgettable trip down the rabbit hole–and the grown woman whose story is no less enthralling.

But oh my dear, I am tired of being Alice in Wonderland. Does it sound ungrateful?

Alice Liddell Hargreaves’s life has been a richly woven tapestry: As a young woman, wife, mother, and widow, she’s experienced intense passion, great privilege, and greater tragedy. But as she nears her eighty-first birthday, she knows that, to the world around her, she is and will always be only “Alice.” Her life was permanently dog-eared at one fateful moment in her tenth year–the golden summer day she urged a grown-up friend to write down one of his fanciful stories.

That story, a wild tale of rabbits, queens, and a precocious young child, becomes a sensation the world over. Its author, a shy, stuttering Oxford professor, does more than immortalize Alice–he changes her life forever. But even he cannot stop time, as much as he might like to. And as Alice’s childhood slips away, a peacetime of glittering balls and royal romances gives way to the urgent tide of war.

For Alice, the stakes could not be higher, for she is the mother of three grown sons, soldiers all. Yet even as she stands to lose everything she treasures, one part of her will always be the determined, undaunted Alice of the story, who discovered that life beyond the rabbit hole was an astonishing journey.

A love story and a literary mystery, Alice I Have Been brilliantly blends fact and fiction to capture the passionate spirit of a woman who was truly worthy of her fictional alter ego, in a world as captivating as the Wonderland only she could inspire.

About the Author:

Melanie Benjamin was born in Indianapolis, Indiana. An avid reader all her life—as a child, she was the proud winner, several years running, of the summer reading program at her local library—she still firmly believes that a lifetime of reading is the best education a writer can have.

While attending the Indiana University—Purdue University at Indianapolis, Melanie performed in many community theater productions before meeting her husband, moving to the Chicago area and raising two sons. Writing was always beckoning, however, and soon she began writing for local magazines and newspapers before venturing into her first love, fiction.

By incorporating her passion for history and biography, she has found her niche writing historical fiction, concentrating on the "stories behind the stories." ALICE I HAVE BEEN is her first historical novel; she is currently at work on her second, also to be published by Delacorte Press.

She and her family still live in the Chicago area; when she's not writing, she's gardening, taking long walks, rooting for the Cubs—

And reading, of course.

My Review:

This book certainly caught my attention from the start. I have always wondered about the "back history" to famous stories. I remember reading about Alice and watching the cartoon based on the book. I thought it was a wonderful story, but always wondered if there was a real Alice somewhere.

I found it quite interesting to read about Alice Liddell and her life. I felt the blending of fiction and reality were blurred so well. I had never known that Lewis Carroll's (or Charles Lutwidge Dodgson) life was so controversial. I definitely recommend this book to any fan of Alice!

I gave this book a 4.5/5 stars because it was interesting and thought-provoking but there were a few laggy bits. It doesn't over emphasizes or tries to cast any shadows over Carroll's relationships with young girls. It just simply is what it is, and that is a great novel!

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

End of Event Meme

1. Which hour was most daunting for you? My son (who is five) was with me the whole time so there were little moments each other that diverted my attention away from reading. I think this was a plus as it kept me from burning out faster.

2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year? I loved reading Alice I Have Been, but I'm not sure how high the interest is for it. Just a plain awesome character study.

3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year? Nope, I'm definitely in for next year though! Will definitely have Mr. Trent go to grandpa's for the weekend! LOL

4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon? The event was very well organized. I loved checking in every hour to see more support! Twitter was very helpful too! I just wished I had one of those fancy phones that have internet!

5. How many books did you read? 5 books total

6. What were the names of the books you read? Alice I Have Been-345 (but I started in the middle for the event) Benny and Shrimp-209, Sex, Drugss & Gefilte Fish-248, Marked-306, and Too Many Visitor for One Little House-40 pages. I read the last one to my son, since it's a children's book.

7. Which book did you enjoy most? Alice I Have Been

8. Which did you enjoy least? I was underwhelmed by Benny and Shrimp. It was cute but I had heard so much about it.

9. If you were a Cheerleader, do you have any advice for next year’s Cheerleaders? I wasn't a Cheerleader but they did make me smile and kept my energy from draining a lot sooner! I was impressed at how many people showed up to cheer me on! Thanks you guys!

10. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time? VERY much already in for next year! I'll probably try for the WHOLE 24 hours next year!
