What's New?

So..I'm sure that someone has noticed that my blog has been quiet this week..well there is a good reason for this! I swear! I have been promoted at work! Yay! This week I've been trying to squeeze as much work out of the month as I can! Plus, I've been training for this promotion! I have not been doing much of anything but work!

The state of this blog is NOT in jeopardy! I will continue to blog and review but this week was really busy! Look for things to continue as per normal next week! :)

Also,
I will be participating AND hosting a mini-challenge! So keep an eye peeled for that! I can't wait! (if you want to sign up there's still time! click the pic and you'll go to the blog)

It's Banned Book Week!

There are SO many things wrong with the words banned books, that I cannot even fathom the mentality behind doing so! Books should be loved and cherished and if you don't like what they say then DON'T read them! Simple enough, right?

I'm joining in with a crap ton of readers this week to celebrate those wonderful/quirky/weird/and challenged books that have made some small minded people uncomfortable! Check out this list and you will be surprised to see what shows up! Maybe YOUR favorite?

List of books most commonly challenged/banned.

In honor of this week, I am going to try to read two (or more) from this list! My two first selections are Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (which I've read and loved) and Candide by Voltaire.

Are you reading banned books this week?

Cover Art Weekend Blog Hop

This is a weekly thing dedicated to the wacky, wonderful, and sometimes hilarious book covers out there! It's hosted by Socrates' Book Reviews and is a weekly/weekend thing.

If you wanna join in then click the button up top!

Here are my contributions:

I love it! It's hand drawn and kind of rough around the edges, just like the title character. I think it fits perfectly.

Next up:

This one just makes me cringe. It makes my lips feel so dry! Now I want this book, but I don't know if I can handle looking at the cover for too long!

Quick Review: Married With Zombies

Blurb (from amazon):
A heartwarming tale of terror in the middle of the zombie apocalypse.

Meet Sarah and David.

Once upon a time they met and fell in love. But now they're on the verge of divorce and going to couples' counseling. On a routine trip to their counselor, they notice a few odd things - the lack of cars on the highway, the missing security guard, and the fact that their counselor, Dr. Kelly, is ripping out her previous client's throat.

Meet the Zombies.

Now, Sarah and David are fighting for survival in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. But, just because there are zombies, doesn't mean your other problems go away. If the zombies don't eat their brains, they might just kill each other.

My Review:
We all know that I love Zombies..movies and books, it doesn't matter as long as brains are being eaten and the the undead are walking the earth! Luckily Jesse Petersen knows I love Zombies and witty snark, because this book has it all! I loved Flip This Zombie, which I read out of order, so I wanted to go back and read the first book in the series! I had to see how we were introduced to David and Sarah!  These guys are the bestest! They are on the brink of divorce when the apocalypse kicks in! The way they find out is really friggen funny and awesome! Basically that phrase "friggen awesome" describes this entire series so far! I can't wait to get my hands on Eat, Slay, Love!

Review: Love Lies Bleeding

Blurb:
To what lengths would you go to keep a past buried?

Samantha Moore is the golden girl—with a perfect job, a perfect man, a perfect life—until a random act of violence changes everything. Unconscious for two months, Sam awakens from her coma a different person—bitter, in constant pain, and forced to endure medications that leave her nauseous, paranoid, and struggling to keep a grip on reality.

Furious with her family for sending her away to a small, remote town to recuperate—placed completely under a physical therapist’s care and robbed of what little freedom she has left—Sam lashes out at the “nice people” all around her who claim to have only her best interests in mind. But are her violent outbursts the by-product of her condition . . . or something else entirely? Strange things are happening here—and either Samantha Moore is losing her mind or her friendly new neighbors are far more dangerous than they appear to be. . . .

My Review:
This book conjured up some very strong feelings in my mind! At first I didn't particularly like Sam..I mean on one hand I could sympathize, but on the other she seems kind of weak. She was willing to let people tell her how to feel and act and live, but at the same time hating every second of how her life turned out. Yes, she suffered a horrible event, but still..

I didn't like Jackson at ALL! I think I started side eying him so hard, I became afraid my eyes were going to get stuck that way! He's was manipulative and eager to please Sam's father more than he seemed to want to please her. It was creepy. HE was creepy.

A magical thing started happening for me around the middle of the book. After a slow start and a "meh" introduction to the main character..she started to become likeable. I don't know if Jess McConkey is a genius or what, but I went from shaking my head at Sam to cheering her own and loving her! She seemed to get past her victim personality and start to take charge and control of her life.  I was very pleased!
This book totally blew me away, after a somewhat rough start. The characters from top to bottom were interesting and well written. I enjoyed reading this! The only downside was the slow start (for me anyways.)

Review: Witches of East End

From Goodreads:
The three Beauchamp women--Joanna and her daughters Freya and Ingrid--live in North Hampton, out on the tip of Long Island. Joanna can resurrect people from the dead and heal the most serious of injuries. Ingrid, her bookish daughter, has the ability to predict the future and weave knots that can solve anything from infertility to infidelity. And finally, there's Freya, the wild child, who has a charm or a potion that can cure most any heartache.

For centuries, all three women have been forced to suppress their abilities. But then Freya, who is about to get married to the wealthy and mysterious Bran Gardiner, finds that her increasingly complicated romantic life makes it more difficult than ever to hide her secret. Soon Ingrid and Joanna confront similar dilemmas, and the Beauchamp women realize they can no longer conceal their true selves. When a young girl disappears over the Fourth of July weekend, they realize it's time to uncover who and what dark forces are working against them.

My Review:

This is definitely a quick and tasty read! I love a good witch story and I was not disappointed in The Witches of East End. The characters were well developed and relate-able...well as relate-able as someone with witchy-like powers can be to a non-witchy person! I especially had a fondness for Freya..she's wild and independent but put in a position of having to suppress her true nature! I felt bad for her and her family. The backstory showed that they had gone through so much, but were still touch and strong women! It's sounds cliched and it is in a way, but Melissa de la Cruz somehow manages to sprinkle a lot of febreeze on them and make them smell fresh again!

I recommend.

Quick Review: Centuries of June

Blurb:

From Publishers Weekly

Face down on the bathroom floor after "a conk on the skull," Jack, the narrator of Donohue's unconventional latest (after Angels of Destruction), embarks on an epic and darkly funny journey through time and space without traveling much beyond his own bathroom. Visited by seven ghostly women, and eventually his wife, Jack stands in for disappointing men throughout history as each of the phantom visitors tells him her life story. From Dolly, the Tlingit woman who marries a shape-shifting bear, to Alice, who winds up on the wrong end of the Salem witch trials, and Bunny, a New York City housewife whose search for love goes very wrong, the women each accuse Jack, tell their story, and then fade into a chorus with the others. When Jack finally hears out his own wife, the reason for the night's events—including stopped clocks, talking cats, and what could be the ghost of Samuel Beckett—becomes clear. Donohue's faultless eye for character and keen sense of humor keeps what could easily become a muddled mess pristine, with members of his quorum shining individually but also acting as cogs in the larger story's machinery. There are moments when the reader is left to wonder how things can possibly come together, but it's worthwhile to trust Donohue's narrators as they lead this puzzling and greatly satisfying trip. My Review:

Centuries of June is a book that is certainly hard to put down. Also,  it is somewhat hard to explain properly. There are so many intriguing things going on that I can only suggest  that you would have to read it for yourself to fully grasp the amazingness. The story is intricately woven and developed that it leaves you feeling completely satisfied! I loved it very much! I didn't imagine that this would be my cup of tea, but I completely devoured it! It's has elements of a ghost story, a love story, and a mystery all rolled into one! So there is pretty much something for everyone!

I recommend!

Quick Review: Hold Me Closer, Necromancer

Hold Me Closer, NecromancerFrom GoodReads:

Sam leads a pretty normal life. He may not have the most exciting job in the world, but he’s doing all right—until a fast food prank brings him to the attention of Douglas, a creepy guy with an intense violent streak.

Turns out Douglas is a necromancer who raises the dead for cash and sees potential in Sam. Then Sam discovers he’s a necromancer too, but with strangely latent powers. And his worst nightmare wants to join forces . . . or else.

With only a week to figure things out, Sam needs all the help he can get. Luckily he lives in Seattle, which has nearly as many paranormal types as it does coffee places. But even with newfound friends, will Sam be able to save his skin?

My Review:

Sarcastic, witty, hi-larious...just a few words that pop into mind when I was reading this book! I literally LOL'd a few times while reading this! My brain was so pleased! I loved Sam and his friends..especially Ramon! Everything about this book called to me as on the nose perfect! I loved every single character really! This book is now officially one of my top favorites! I think I managed to read it in one day from front to back! That's how much I enjoyed the story!

Review: Ready Player One

Ready Player OneFrom Amazon:
It’s the year 2044, and the real world is an ugly place.

Like most of humanity, Wade Watts escapes his grim surroundings by spending his waking hours jacked into the OASIS, a sprawling virtual utopia that lets you be anything you want to be, a place where you can live and play and fall in love on any of ten thousand planets.

And like most of humanity, Wade dreams of being the one to discover the ultimate lottery ticket that lies concealed within this virtual world. For somewhere inside this giant networked playground, OASIS creator James Halliday has hidden a series of fiendish puzzles that will yield massive fortune—and remarkable power—to whoever can unlock them.

For years, millions have struggled fruitlessly to attain this prize, knowing only that Halliday’s riddles are based in the pop culture he loved—that of the late twentieth century.

My Review:

Hey, guess who LOVED this book? ME! Yup,  this is going to be a very positive review! I gobbled this book up completely! I think I burped up a few chapters  right after I put the book down, too! I loved all the 80's pop culture references and the video game trivia! As a fan of games and the wife of an avid gamer, this book hit home with me! It's obvious that Ernest Cline is either a gamer himself, or spent a lot of time researching, because he knows his stuff!

The story is amazingly well done too! It's kind of eerie how close to reality this book gets! It does seem like people are becoming more and more tuned into virtual worlds that real life. I see it in myself and I'm sadly starting to see it in my son. He'd rather play Jumpstart or Freerealms then play outside! So yeah this definitely was a wake up call!

It's also an incredibly crafted piece of work! It's an adventure on a grand scale with bits of humor tossed in to get you laughing and then almost instantly gasping for breath! I was cheering Wade and his friends along. Hoping that they would beat the bad guys and win to save OASIS! I loved how Halliday came across as a sort of virtual Willy Wonka weeding out the unworthy from the ones worthy of taking control of his beloved world!

This is a great book! It's fun and full of awesomeness! I definitely give it a B+

Guest Post: Atonus Perry

The Mark of Perillius: Sinexia, Book One

Pure Escapism

“I had read tons of science fiction. I was fascinated by other worlds, other environments. For me, it was fantasy, but it was not fantasy in the sense of pure escapism.” - James Cameron

When asked how I can write about an entire world of fantasy, my answer is “how can I not”? Sinexia: The Mark of Perillius is rife with people, plants, and animals that were created in the bowels of my imagination. I was a mere lad when I began designing life that only existed in the universe of my mind. My mom would come to the school and the teacher would pull out stacks of work that I had not done. It wasn’t that I could not do them. I just enjoyed looking at the characters in my imagination more than boring math problems. That particular incident happened in second grade. I was seven. I hated school in those days. Once I had gotten what I wanted from it, (which was reading all of the stories in the second grade reading book, as well as select portions of the science book) I would immerse myself in my own thoughts. Once I ventured to the land inside my head, boredom was no longer a problem.

In the years that followed, my daydreams would grow in complexity, scale, and detail. They all involved me and my friends and family gaining some sort of superpowers, or were about whatever girl I was crushing on. Sometimes it was both! During one point in my life, my daydreams co-existed completely with my consciousness. This means that I was able to daydream while going about my everyday life. I remember taking a test in high school while watching beings with amazing battle prowess engaging in a battle of epic proportions. I got an A on the test. In those days I had to focus to turn off my imagination. I still have awesome daydreams, but now I choose when to turn them on. I draw from them the material that exist in my writing.

How can I write about an entire world of fantasy? How can I not? I have no choice. My imagination needs an outlet. Also, Peter Parker (Marvel’s Spiderman) is always going on and on saying “with great power comes great responsibility.” If that is true, then maybe I have a responsibilty to share my imagination with the world. – A.P.

Blog Tour: Sinexia

The Mark of Perillius: Sinexia, Book One
About Sinexia: The Mark of Perillius:
SINEXIA is a bastard world that never should have existed. Its birth was an accident. Born of war and anointed with savagery, its lands were conquered by magicians, monsters, and creatures that some would revere as gods or demons. Just as Earth holds Sinexia's Origin, Sinexia holds the fate of the Earth. The Sinexia series chronicles the events that bind Earth and Sinexia. Read them and become engrossed in the tales of honor, love, despair, and action that cycle in a ring of creation and cataclysm. The Mark of Perillius follows the adventures of a young orphan who inherits the powers and abilities of his fabled ancestor. He is taken from the only normalcy he has ever known and tossed into a world of mystery and magic. Once there, he must learn to master his newfound abilities while encountering a host of rich characters, places of wonder, and dire situations.

The orphan's name is Emberillius. He begins his journey as a sixteen year old young boy. He must spend nine long years in Sinexia if he is to have any chance at all of saving the Earth from an impending catastrophe. It is during this time that he learns about love, war, hate, responsibility, life, death, good, evil, and sacrifice as he matures into a man. Through the trails of life an orphan is forged into a hero.

My Review:
I love the fantasy genre. I love the storytelling and creative license that writers have with this style of book. I had mixed feelings about this book. So in this review,  I'll focus on the positives of Sinexia first and the negatives last, just to be fair.

Emberillius is quite a  unique character. I find him really interesting in the fact that he's thrust into his destiny just as we are thrust quickly into the story. There is very little adjustment time, but he takes up his role and rises to the occasion. I think this is a great character. The story is rather impressive too. There are two Earths. One with magic and one without. That's awesome! The possibilities are endless with this set up! :)  All in all the bones of this book are great. The plot and most of the characters are well thought out and intriguing. Also, if you love action this book does not lack any at all. You have plenty of delicious action scenes to nosh on!
Now, because this story starts off so quickly there are times where the story seems rushed and doesn't quite make sense. It caused me to pause and wonder about the characters actions and behaviors. The start was definitely NOT the strong part of the book.  I did however enjoy not having to plod through tons of back story and explanations just to get to the meat of this book.  I thought that at times the writing was a bit stilted. Characters sounded rather robotic and stiff. This was especially true in the beginning, but as I said that is not the strong part of the story. So the stilted dialogue, may have just been the fact that this is his first book, at least I believe that it is.

I give this a C+. The story is strong, it has it's defects but the heart of the story is where it's at. If you like lots of action in your fantasy then this is for you! I applaud Mr. Perry for his efforts and I wish him the very best!

Review: Unwind

UnwindFrom Amazon:

In a society where unwanted teens are salvaged for their body parts, three runaways fight the system that would "unwind" them
Connor's parents want to be rid of him because he's a troublemaker. Risa has no parents and is being unwound to cut orphanage costs. Lev's unwinding has been planned since his birth, as part of his family's strict religion. Brought together by chance, and kept together by desperation, these three unlikely companions make a harrowing cross-country journey, knowing their lives hang in the balance. If they can survive until their eighteenth birthday, they can't be harmed -- but when every piece of them, from their hands to their hearts, are wanted by a world gone mad, eighteen seems far, far away.

My Review:

Hmm..this book. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I SEE where he was going with it, but I don't think the execution was quite right. The writing itself wasn't at all bad. I do enjoy the way that Shusterman writes, but the idea that the Pro-Choice AND Pro Life moment would both agree that killing an almost grown child is OKAY is kinda where he lost me.  He kind of missed the point or maybe I missed his point entirely as I just couldn't get past that aspect of it.

I'm not going to get into my personal beliefs, and I don't want to start a debate. The two sides would NEVER agree that killing a child that's out of the womb and almost grown would be acceptable. That's just not gonna happen. So the actions of the parent's and the acceptance of society in this book is just something I couldn't grasp. I love Dystopian fiction, but it has to have some sort of foothold in reality to make it creepy for me.

The characters were very well written and the plot was interesting enough, but it's that one major flaw that I just couldn't get over, that keeps me from being a fan of his novel.

I give it a  C-- It had a good thought behind it but just didn't execute it properly.

Review: The Body Finder

The Body FinderFrom Amazon:
Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her "power" to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes the dead leave behind in the world . . . and the imprints that attach to their killers.
Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find dead birds her cat left for her. But now that a serial killer is terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he's claimed haunt her daily, Violet realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.
Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved by her hope that Jay's intentions are much more than friendly. But even as she's falling intensely in love, Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer . . . and becoming his prey herself.

My Review:
I know I'm tardy to the party about this book, but I finally got my hands on it just recently! I had read so many great reviews that I just had to read it and see for myself. I'm so friggen glad that I did! The writing is amazing and the plot was pretty darn good! So many time I've been disappointed by a "popular..omg you have to read this" kind of book, but this one  lived up to the hype!

My hat gets tipped to Kimberly Derting for writing this awesome story! I really felt like I knew Violet and was nail biting it through a few scenes. When the nails get nibbled you know it's a good story! Right? It had the right amount of tension and mystery! I had a few moments where I was sure something was going to happen and it just didn't! Which is good! I hate predictable plots! This is a great piece of work and I definitely plan on getting the next book!

So basically I give it a B+

Daily Check-In: Friday Sept. 2

Photobucket

So I'm participating in the Month Long Read-a-Thon (click button for more into) and decided that I will update once daily. Since this is a month long event I won't track time read, just books and pages. My aim for September is 20 books total! Let's see if I reach it!

The "thon" started yesterday but I didn't get much reading in, so I will start today.

My daily statuses will usually be short, just to keep track per day of what I've accomplished!

Status Update #1
Books Read: Mile 81-Stephen King (ebook)-51 pages, Love Lies Bleeding-Jess McConkey(ARC)-60 pages
Pages Read: 111 pages
Total for the Month: 1 Book, 111 pages
Daily Thoughts:  I spent a good chunk of today getting my reviews scheduled and caught up. I'll have much more time to read tomorrow.

September Goals

I has a plan ya'll! August was great with books! I may not have stayed on track with the reviews, but I sure did read a lot! Woot! So I have decided that I'm going to post some goals for this month. I've thought about what I want to do with it and now it's time for some action! So here they are:

Book and Blog Related:
  • Read 20 books total
  • 2 of these 20 will be Classics (Rebecca and To Kill a Mockingbird)
  • Read 1 nonfiction
  • Catch up on ALL reviews that need posting!!!!!-big ole emphasis here!
  • Set and stick with a posting/reviewing schedule. Nothing fancy or hard (since I'm a lazy..you know what) so that I will stick with it!
There! I made some goals and put them out into the universe! Now I am satisfied and ready to get started. What are your goals?
